Analysing the performance of the Hyundai scarifier The aerating roller works just as well. You may find that you don’t actually need to use it once you’ve scarified, but, if you do, you’ll be happy with the results.

Using a lawn raker machine is much easier today compared to manual scarification with handrakes. Once a lawn has been raked, fresh grass can have ample space, air and nutrients to grow into a bustling lawn. Manual rolling drum – ideally you want a good number of metal spikes on the drum to create plenty of holes – as a guide, 27 spikes will give you about 180 spikes per square metre. The spikes should also be at least 5cm long to ensure they penetrate the ground deeply. Although the fact that the machine tips over instead of standing upright could be considered a safety issue, AL-KO has taken other steps to make this machine as safe as possible. It’s the only lawn rake and scarifier I tested that has a special light to tell you if the roller isn’t inserted correctly, and it’s also equipped with a safety button that needs to be pressed before you can pull the trigger. That said, the safety button and the trigger are spaced so far away from each other that you’ll need to use two hands each time you want to turn the machine on, which is pretty awkward. Powered scarifiers. Available as either corded, where you’ll need a power supply, or cordless, these have knife blades attached to their cylinders rather than tines, making them effective at removing moss and thatch. Used on the lowest setting, they create slits in the turf, which helps aerate it. Basically, the deeper your thatch buildup, the deeper you will want your scarifier to penetrate. Having depths from -10 (below the surface) to +10mm (above the surface) is fairly typical on electric or petrol scarifiers.There is no level indicator or vision window on the Bosch ALR 900 so it can be little difficult to know when the collection box is full. The Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 does have a collection box window, this is a nice touch – well done Flymo. However, if your lawn is struggling due to compaction or you have a heavy clay soil, your lawn will benefit from deeper aeration which is the process of opening up the soil by spiking it with long metal tines. See our review of the best lawn aerators for 2021. Let’s start with assembly – something that I never really enjoy doing. This Hyundai needed a little more work than the other models I tested. Assembly took about 30 minutes in total. This isn’t a huge amount of time, but keep in mind that I have a fair bit of experience assembling scarifiers. For someone who has never done this before, it’ll likely take much longer, especially considering that the instruction manual was very little help.

Only 4 height settings. This is a shame as most of the Bosch’s competitors have at least 6 height settings. Manual scarifiers – in addition to strong, good-sized blades, a telescopic handle is a useful feature to make it as comfortable as possible to use - a soft-grip is also a bonus. Some types are designed so you can adjust how deeply the blades rake through the grass and thatch, which is extremely useful. Things started off well, as this lawn rake and scarifier only took about 10 minutes to assemble. Although the instructions that come with the machine aren’t great, it’s easy enough to figure out what goes where – simply attach the handles, plug in the power lead, and you’re good to go! This again does put it slightly ahead of the Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400. Features found on some lawn rakes don’t make the job easier but are “nice to haves”. The Jet Collect system is clearly a feature that makes a real difference to the job in hand, the collection box capacity is increased and the ability to collect the debris is improved – Great job Bosch! You can use a depth gauge or a raker guide to measure the rakers. I prefer the guide because it’s faster and more accurate. They are also cheap and can be found in most parts stores. However, some chain makers will also ship their products with a free guide.

At this price range this really gives great value for money and you would be very hard pressed to find an electric lawn rake that performs this well, and has such a good build quality for this price. If you’re looking to scarify large areas such as golf courses or are a professional gardener, then nothing but a petrol powered dethatching beast will do. Now, overall does the above make the Bosch better than the Flymo? Yes, not only the Flymo but almost all the lawn rakes we have tested. The Bosch ALR 900 will not disappoint when it comes to collection and emptying of the collected debris. to clear, smooth, or prepare with a rake: [no object ] raking and digging in the garden. [~ +object ] She was raking the yard. My opinion of this AL-KO lawn rake and scarifier kept improving after I started scarifying my mossy lawn. It didn’t take long for the machine to pull all of the moss and thatch out, and its large 1500W engine prevented it from overheating when it was used for longer stretches.For sensible money you can buy this 2-in-1 scarifier and aerator from VonHaus. It really only has two competitors in my mind other than the Makita UV3600 Lawn Scarifier which isn’t even fair to review in the same category – let’s just call the Makita a Tiller :D. Firstly the better but way more expensive Bosch AVR 1100 Verti Cutter Lawn Raker and the BMC that looks to be built on the same tech with the same depth of lawn rake (15mm to -7mm). As a lawn aerator I Fancied the Einhell, but as a scarifier of lighter material, on money, this wins hands down at just over half the price! I think for thatch this is a real winner: Making a minor apparance in Chapter 2: Busted, Raker becomes an important player in Chapter 8: The Matriarch, leading them—or more accurately, Peter Quill—to Sacrosanct's new Matriarch. In that same chapter, Gamora will go after Raker, and player must choose again between let her do so or stop her from going after Raker. It feels faster than the others I tested, and it’s also noticeably wider (36cm instead of the standard 32cm) meaning that it won’t take you quite as long to scarify your lawn. Not only will it save you time, but it does a great job too. Once you find the right height setting for your lawn, it’ll pull up moss and thatch without damaging healthy grass. It doesn’t leave the lawn quite as churned up as some of its competition, yet it effectively removes what it needs to. The Bosch ALR 900 has a very impressive 50 litre grass box, now this may not sound large, but when compared the Flymo at just 34 litres you will see this is large for a lawn rake of this size.

Overfilling the rakers can cause binding. This is because the depth gauges can no longer measure the cutters correctly. As a result, the chain will not cut as it should. The solution to this problem is to replace the chain. When looking at a product of this type, it’s good to compare it to something that claims to be a similar product. I decided to compare it to the Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Electric Lawnrake to understand what makes either of these electric rakes stand out in terms of performance, build quality and value for money. Both the Bosch and Flymo rakes are of a similar price and size (32cm and 34cm rake width), both use a cylinder rake, however, the Bosch has slightly more power at 900 W compared to 750 W of the Flymo. With this lawn rake you’re getting features normally found in high priced rakes, this is not the cheapest but is a very reasonable priced for what you are getting.Ease of Use: When assessing ease of use, I considered how each model started and operated, the collection and disposal process, and the positioning of key features like the handlebars. I also thought about each model’s weight, as I know heavy models can make use harder. Slightly smaller scarifiers are typically more manageable for the average gardener, so models that weighed 12 kg or less were rated the best in terms of ease of use. However, modern lawn rakers are mower-like machines complete with dozens of accessories and functionalities. People in the UK refer to these lawn rakers as scarifiers because, well, we invented the language and will play with it as we see fit.
